Introduction

20th anniversary of the dissolution of the USSR

» The process of actual dissolution of the USSR lasted from 1989 till 1991. It included adoption of declarations of sovereignty by the republics, giving economic independence to the Baltic republics, etc. By December 1991, the Soviet Union actually dissolved.

» December 8, 1991: the Belavezha Accords were signed, stating that the Soviet Union as a geopolitical reality and the subject of international law has disappeared.

» December 26, 1991: Council of Republics of the USSR Supreme Soviet adopted the Declaration #142-N on the dissolution of the USSR, elimination of all the authorities of the USSR, including the Supreme Soviet.

» Now we have 19 countries at the territory of the former USSR: 15 UN members (Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Estonia, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Latvia, Lithuania, Moldova, Russia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Ukraine and Uzbekistan), 2 partially recognized (Abkhazia and South Ossetia) and 2 unrecognized (Nagorno-Karabakh and Transnistria). 15 of these countries issue their own coins. This territory is commonly refered to as "CIS and Baltic countries", though 5 of the 19 countries are neither members of CIS nor Baltic countries.
